Proposal, Creation and Pictures

Proposal:
Name: I chose the name: "Rappers Delight" as it is a name associated with Hip-Hop as it the song title of the SugarHill Gang who are a famous Rap group. Therefore, I felt this name would be fitting to have because it relates to the genre of music I'm trying to reach. Furthermore, the denotation conveys that it is a delight to read.

Genre: The genre of Hip-Hop was chosen by people that took part in my questionnaire so all that will feature in my magazine will be Hip-Hip theme and style.

The creation of my magazine: After planning and researching for the preparation of my music magazine I came to the conclusion that I would use the genre of Hip-Hop music. I chose this genre simply because I personally love Hip-Hop and the messages that it sends out especially those that are positive, as well as the artists that produce the music controversial or not. Hip-Hop is a a unique, popular and entertaining genre of music. I also chose Hip-Hop because of the responses from my questionnaire which the majority vote went toward.
To begin my magazine I had to take a number of pictures which suited my magazines genre, this picture included relevant props such as money, phones and jewellery in order to give my artist a gangster look but also a business look. I drew inspiration from another edition of vibe which shows 50 Cent in a suit using this I have decided to make my model dress in a similar code. I want to portray this look with on my magazine as it reflects how Hip-Hop is progressing.
After taking the photographs they then had to be edited in order for them to be placed on different backgrounds. I edited my photographs through Adobe PhotoShop this consisted of smoothing the skin and brightening up the eyes. After editing my photographs I began to roughly place my images on to Adobe In design as I explored how to use the software. Earlier on in the project I began to draft my article for my double page spread in order to have enough time to adapt to my draft.

Pictures: Once my photographs had been shortlisted and roughly placed into In Design it helped me to place my picture so that they fitted so that I would be able to add text around the pictures. When I researched into other Hip-Hop music magazines I established that the layouts were always very simple with the use of the staring artist on the cover so the image would be the centre of attention, bold title colour complemented by the background to make it stand out and bold sub-headings of the features in the magazine.
This helped me to layout my own magazine as I decided to follow the same design with the exception of adding more images to the front cover to complement what else is featuring in my magazine

Surveys and Results

In order to reach my target audience I decided to conduct a number of surveys to find out what my target audience (young adults/teenagers) wanted to see from a magazine and what they wanted it to entail. The charts below convey the results:
1)

This chart conveys the amount of people that voted for there preferred music that I should base my magazine upon. This shows that I should have Hip-Hop as my magazine genre as the highest amount of people voted for it.

2)

This chart conveys the amount of people that have voted for name that my magazine should be called. As you can see by a considerable amount people like the name “Rappers Delight” therefore I will be choosing this to be the name of my magazine.

3)

This chart conveys the amount of people that have voted for the colour scheme that should be on my magazine. However, as you can see from the results there are the same amount of votes for Red and Yellow. Therefore I will have a red and yellow colour scheme running through my magazine as this is what the audience would like to see and they do compliment each other well.

Audience Profile

Jordan is a 16 year old who goes to Richmond college. He lives with his small family in Streatham. He lives the normal teen life; which entails him going out with his friends, girlfriend, shopping, raving and he has a passionate love for football but other than this he enjoys his musical comfort of Hip-Hop and inspires to be a well acclaimed English rapper. During his outings he is never without his headphones which blare out the musical lyrics of: Lil Wayne, Jay-z, Drake, Eminem, 2Pac, BIG, 50 Cent and the legend who is Slick-Rick. His musical background comes from his mother who was brought up on the foundation of Hip-Hop with artists like: Run DMC. He is currently subscribed to Hip-Hop magazine: “The Source” he pays £10 for this subscription and is always looking at new and exclusive Hip-Hop magazines to subscribe to in order to increase his outlook on Hip-Hop music and culture and what they are looking for in new up and coming artists.

Research into 2 real life Hip-Hop Magazines

Vibe magazine

  • Founded by Quincy Jones who is a music producer

  • Published in 1993, in partnership with Time Inc.

  • The magazine features Hip- Hop and RnB as well as actors and entertains around the Hip-Hop industry.

  • "The new Vibe is the premier destination for urban music, entertainment, culture and lifestyle for the aspirational 18-34 year old."

  • One issue costs: £5.00

By finding these facts this research will potentially aid me to create my own magazine and follow the codes and conventions needed to reach my target market. I did this by analysing this edition of Vibe magazine: This magazine uses a very simplistic layout with the use of:

  • A eye catching title which is written in bold and in red so it is noticeable against at white/grey background.

  • A mid-shot of a rapper who is looking directly in the camera using an intimidating stance to show he is "hard". This is further strengthened by the amount of tattoo's he shows by having a vest on which gives him a intimidating approach, which comply to Hip-Hop genre.

  • Bold sub-headings of features so they can easily be seen and therefore entice potential buyers.

I then analysed another magazine of the same genre called " The Source":

  • Established as a newsletter in 1988

  • President of the magazine: Jeremy Miller

  • One of the largest and most influential hip-hop publications in the United States

  • Said to be “The Bible of Hip-Hop.“

  • Targets all hip hop lovers of all ages that have a thorough interest in the genre and all that it has to offer.

This magazine although a different name uses the same conventions for example:

  • The bold title is used again to notify customer to what the magazine is therefore it is eye catching. Due to the fact the white font is against the white as a resulting making it stand out more to on looking customers.

  • The use of the main featured artist placed in middle of the magazine therefore giving him importance. Although this picture is a close up in comparison to "Vibe Magazine" it uses the same convention.

  • Bold sub-headings are used to show who is featuring in the magazine so target audience can see who is featuring potentially leading to more buyers.

Reason I researched

I decided to conduct thorough research into my music genre and similar magazine types as it will strengthen my knowledge on other magazines which are targeting the same market as me. Therefore, I can draw comparisons and also have a guideline to what codes and conventions to follow when putting together my magazine, with regards to layout, picture types and features to include. I drew most of my inspiration from Vibe magazine:

Planning & Research

Preliminary task: School magazine
Before producing a final piece I had to begin with a preliminary task. I had to convey that my skills of producing a magazine had progressed from amateur to professional. This magazine was produced using Microsoft Publisher, this task in comparison to my final piece was considerably easier. This was due to the fact I was aware of how Publisher worked and therefore was able to create a school magazine fairly quickly due to the software's simplicity. However, the quality of the magazine was reflective of the software as it did not look either professional or marketable, As a result, the progression from my preliminary task to final magazine was clear and was conveyed through the production of my Hip-Hop magazine.

My task
My focal task in this whole production is to create a music magazine which follow the codes and conventions of a real life magazine of the market today. In order to do this I will be conducting research into my genre of music and to what the market like to see from a Hip-Hop magazine as a whole. The task will also allow me to get a better insight into the media and the technologies of today.

Hip-Hop music
I have decided to chose the Hip-Hop genre of music as my magazine as it is regarded by many as a very popular genre of music by the participants that partook in my questionnaire.

With its unique sounds, Hip-Hop is commonly based on concepts of looping, rapping, free styling, Dj-ing, scratching, sampling and beat boxing. The music is used to express concerns of political, social, and personal issues. I also chose this music genre for my magazine because I personally love Hip-Hop and the messages that it sends out especially those that are positive. As well as the artists that produce the music controversial or not Hip Hop is a a unique, popular and entertaining genre of music.
